Elephant Scientist author, Caitlin O’Connell, talks about elephant families at TEDYouth Conference
Written by Caitlin O’Connell:
Given the current elephant poaching crisis in Africa, this is a time when elephants are most in need of our understanding and appreciation.
When I was invited to give a talk for TEDYouth to middle school and high school students in New Orleans, I decided to approach the next generation of elephant enthusiasts and conservationists by focusing on the fact that elephants live very similar social lives to our own.
By personalizing elephants, I hope that we might feel closer to them, and perhaps that feeling will lead to better protection for them in the wild, either directly or indirectly.
